Spare the Rod & Spoil 2C Dearest 2C, I wanted to talk to you immediately after what happened today but somehow, despite the surge of feelings I felt straight after the incident, I know not what to say, facing the class after school today. I thought of asking how you (especially the 3 of you) feel about the incident.. I am worried if it will cause some of you to be low and sad but I decided against that later. For, I don't want you to think I am on your side and that the punishment is something not deserved. Yes, I feel the punishment is justified. This is the second time the class has brought tears to my eyes. I remember telling you end of last year, I wouldn't want to be your FT in 2007 because I don't want to be there to witness you growing your devil horns. Yet, I still became your FT this year by the school arrangements. I accepted it gladly, nonetheless, at least we're back together again.. all the familiar faces. Like a family. & I thought, having known you & you knowing I care for you, will prevent you from becoming devil-ish. I'm disappointed (not angry) to see you proved me wrong time and again.. Seeing how each stroke made the 3 of you cringe made my heart ache. As the saying goes, "spare the rod and spoil the child". I guess maybe I haven't been strict enough with you, that's why some of you became the way you are, having to come to this stage of learning things the hard way.. Deep inside, I feel I've failed as your "Mum". Regardless of how many times I've shouted at the class, all of you remain as you are -- the nice ones still as cooperative and the less nice ones (I wouldn't call you naughty for I believe there can be an angel in everyone of you.. I've seen it in you when you were in Sec 1) still as uncooperative. I once heard these words from someone, "Instead of having to let the law cane my child when he does wrong in future, I will rather cane him now, myself, to correct him." Somehow, someway, things have progress to the stage where I have to take a back position and let the school discipline my "child(ren)". Isn't this a failure on my part? I know not what to say to make you listen anymore. I know I'm not the kind of person who can be stern and strict for long so I can only sincerely and truly hope and pray that each and everyone of you will bear this lesson in mind and strive for the better or even, the best.
